Celebrate Groundhog Day Zoo-style with Spike the hedgehog!  Tuesday at 10 a.m., Spike will emerge to see if he sees his shadow.

groundhogSpike the Hedgehog is one of the Zoo’s Education Ambassadors.  And, for his second year, he is going to appear from his “hibernation” to celebrate Groundhog Day. With the assistance from Randy Wisthoff, Zoo Director, Spike hopes he will not see his shadow so perfect Zoo-weather will be in sight and the end of winter is near.

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH)

01/22/2010 EYH immerses young women in the sixth to eighth grades in hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Professional women from science and math-related fields facilitate workshops and serve as role models. The conference features a woman keynote speaker. EYH presents science in a way that is exciting, educational and relevant to daily life while fostering career opportunity awareness.

Science Pioneers in conjunction with the Girl Scouts of NE Kansas and NW Missouri conduct this event. Pre-registration is required no later than January 18, 2010. EYH is open to the first 400 young women who register.

There is no cost for adult volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, please email admin@sciencepioneers.org for more information. Information on the Expanding Your Horizons Expansion Program will be giving at the EYH conference. Science City 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm

What is a Science Café?
Science cafés feature a short talk to focus discussion followed by a conversational setting for the rest of the evening.

Goal for the Johnson County Science Café:
To serve as casual setting for the exploration of scientific understanding by the public through conversation. Though some comments may be technical, the goal of the café is to present science in an understandable way to the average person.

Tuesday, February 9, Dr. Dick Wilson, Retired Professor of Biology, Rockhurst University, Science and Society—Is Science truth? Why does it take time for science findings to be accepted by society? Same location and time.
